TSC to Post JSS Intern Teachers In September 2023
When schools reopen for the third term in early September of this year, primary schools will begin receiving junior secondary school (JSS) and primary school intern instructors.
The load of teaching should be lessened by the teachers, especially at junior secondary schools where grade 8 classes will begin in January of the following year.
The Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) published 20,000 teaching openings nationwide two weeks prior.
The commission intends to hire 18,000 interns for junior secondary schools out of the 20,000 total applicants.
The remaining 2,000 recruits will be placed in primary schools to assist in implementing the competency-based curriculum (CBC), according to TSC Chief Executive Nancy Macharia.
According to Macharia, “the programme targets unemployed registered teachers to be placed in learning institutions where their teaching experience will be improved through mentoring, coaching, and exposure to real-world teaching situations.”

The internship lasts for a full year. Those who were interested and qualified had until July 18, 2023, to submit their applications.
Successful applicants will get a monthly stipend of Ksh20,000 for junior secondary school admission, and Ksh15,000 for primary school admission.
However, TSC requested funding from the government in order to confirm the 20,000 teachers it had hired as interns in February of this year on permanent and pensionable conditions.
TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi stated during the launch of the TSC 2023–2027 strategic plan at the Kenya School of Government that teachers will lose motivation if they spend too much time working on internships.
If the Commission receives the necessary funding, it has a plan to confirm the teachers in January 2024, according to Muturi.
TSC plans to spend sh 11 billion for teacher promotions, sh 7.9 billion for CBC, TPAD, and PC training, sh 24 billion for internship recruitment, and sh 73.8 billion for hiring 111,870 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.
According to Commission policy, intern instructors are only permitted to work for a total of two years before transitioning to permanent positions.
For the next five years, the government plans to hire at least 25,000 teachers annually. TSC hired 36,000 teachers in January.
