TSC to hire 11,000 teachers, replace retirees
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is embarking on a recruitment drive to address the growing shortage of teachers. Ms. Nancy Macharia, the CEO of TSC, has revealed plans to hire 11,000 instructors, along with an additional 1,594 retired teachers who will be replaced after serving their two-year extension.
According to Ms. Macharia, the current shortage of teachers stands at 114,581. Out of the new hires, approximately 6,000 will work as interns, while another 5,000 will be employed on a long-term and pensionable basis.
Additionally, a budget of Sh1.2 billion has been allocated for the fiscal year 2023/2024 to recruit 20,000 interns as a temporary measure to address the shortage.
Notably, many teachers who were due to retire in 2020 and 2021 were granted optional extensions to work under contract for up to two years during the Covid-19 pandemic. Ms. Macharia urged teachers to remain vigilant, even as the consequences of the pandemic continue to be a concern.
