TSC to End Recruitment Of Teachers on Permanent Basis
The Senate National Cohesion Committee has recommended that TSC hiring be done on a contract basis rather than with permanent employment with pension benefits.
The legislators claimed that by making this modification, TSC will more effectively employ its little resources to hire more teachers, which is a dire requirement. The TSC report reveals a record-breaking 11,870 teacher shortage.
Nancy Macharia, CEO of TSC, praised the potential benefits of contract work for teachers. She drew attention to a legislative restriction, however, that forbids the commission from keeping instructors on contract for an extended period of time.
The legal necessity that teachers transition into permanent, pensionable positions after two years was laid down by Macharia. This will ensure that teachers receive the job stability and retirement benefits they are entitled to.

Primary school teachers start out earning 35,000 shillings per year for permanent positions and 15,000 shillings per year for contract positions. Similar to this, contract teachers begin at 20,000 shillings per month, whereas permanent secondary school teachers are paid 55,000 shillings per month.
Even though 36,000 new teachers were employed at the start of the year, according to Mrs. Macharia, there is still a shortage. She emphasised the need for 64,541 secondary school teachers and 47,329 primary school teachers.
To properly hire instructors, the commission requires a budget of 14.8 billion shillings per year. Additionally, lawmakers said that the TSC should hire contract instructors to offer fresh viewpoints and specialised knowledge to the classroom.
According to Mrs. Macharia, the commission is required by law to make teaching positions permanent and to begin paying teachers after two years.
