TSC requirements to be a secondary school teacher in 2024
The Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has established requirements for all secondary school teachers in Kenya. With over 300,000 teachers estimated by the TSC, teaching stands as one of the most prominent professions in the country.
The Teachers Service Commission of Kenya, an independent body formed under the Constitution of Kenya, oversees the management of human resources in the education sector. In Kenya, teachers fall into three main categories: Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE), Primary Education Teaching, and Diploma and Degree in education. Each category entails distinct responsibilities and necessitates specific qualifications.
This article particularly delves into the qualifications required for secondary school teachers, a segment where the curriculum and qualifications evolve over time. As of 2024, the TSC mandates updated qualifications for teaching in secondary schools, including specialized programs for teaching visually and hearing impaired students.
The qualifications vary depending on the level of education pursued, be it diploma, bachelor’s degree, or postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE). While some individuals with degrees aspire to become secondary education teachers, the KCSE mean grade requirement of C+ set by the TSC can sometimes pose a challenge for those with grades below this threshold.

Furthermore, the TSC approves specific teaching combinations for secondary schools, encompassing various subjects such as sciences, languages, mathematics, humanities, technicals, and special needs. These approved combinations serve as guidelines for teachers seeking employment in secondary education institutions.
