TSC New Teacher Allowances 2023-2024. TSC updates the teachers allowances from time to time. Those teachers who receive promotions enjoy higher allowances.
What normally determines the amount of allowances you receive is your job group. These job groups are given following the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG).
So you should know that the allowances paid to teachers are not uniform. These allowances are not paid separately but alongside your monthly salary.
You should understand that there are a number of factors that determine your allowances. For example;
- Workstation
- Job group
- Responsibilities
- Type of learners handled
Most allowances are paid every month, but other are off.
Types of allowances Paid by TSC
1. Remunerative Allowances
These allowances they are of two types namely;
- Automatic
- Those paid upon application
Under automatic allowances we have;
- Medical allowances – this is not paid directly to teachers but its sent directly to the medical provider AoN Minet and another sent to NHIF
- House allowance
- Hardship allowance
- Commuter allowance
- Leave allowance
House AllowanceÂ
Firstly, this is paid monthly to all Kenyan teachers using the criteria of your work station and your job grade/group.
Those teachers who have managed higher grades receive higher house Allowance than those in lower grades.
The Salaries And Remuneration Commission (SRC) clusters work stations into four regions which include;
- Nairobi
- Major former municipalities i.e KISUMU, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri, Thika, Kisii, Malindi and Kitale.
The teachers who work in Nairobi receive the highest amount of house allowance while those working in reserve and remote areas receive the lowest amount.
Hardship Allowance
Secondly, teachers working in area with insecurity, harsh climatic conditions and high risk are paid the hardship allowances.
There are places that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has mapped for hardship.
The amount payable is not uniform but depends on the job group one is. Those in higher job groups will receive highest than their counterparts in lower grades.
Commuter Allowance
This allowance solely depends on the teacher’s job group and its paid every month alongside the monthly salary.
Leave Allowance
This allowance is paid at the beginning of every year in January together with the January salary.
However, this allowance is also given as per the teacher’s grade where those in high job groups receive high amounts than their counterparts.
Allowances paid on application
There are those allowances that are paid on application, which include;
1. Responsibility Allowance
These allowances are paid to school administrators including heads, deputy heads and senior teachers recognized by TSC.
This is payable to those who are in job group K and above.
2. Special Duty Allowance
Teachers who have been appointed to job group M and below and are deployed in arid and semi arid lands are paid this type of allowances.
3. Readers Allowance
This allowance is paid to teachers who are visually impaired and have Contracted readers whose qualifications are not less than D+ (plus) at KCSE.
However, the commission determines the rates paid from time to time.
Its also called aid or facilitation allowance that is paid at the rate of Sh15,000 per month to the visually impaired and those confined to the wheelchairs as a result of their disability.
4. Interpreters Allowance
This allowance is paid to teachers who are deaf who seek the services of interpreters while on study leave.
5. Special school Allowance
Teachers who are specialists in special needs education receive this type of allowances. These teachers must be deployed to teach in special schools for them to earn this allowance.
6. Transfer Allowance
When the commission initiates a transfer for a teacher from one school to another, the teacher is paid this allowance.
The teacher receives the amount equivalent to the basic salary for one month.
Reimbursement Expenses
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) reimburses teachers some amounts on certain expenses. They include;
1. Traveling expenses
The teacher is reimbursed this expense Incase;
- The teacher’s interdiction is revoked
- While travelling to attend an interview
- Traveling to a station on first posting outside home county
- Travelling from station on duty outside home county for retirement
- Also teachers in hardship areas who are traveling to their home during school holidays. For you to receive this among your home county must be outside the hardship area.
In short, for you to receive this amount, you must apply and attach all the necessary documents.
2. Quota Per Diem
Lastly, teachers on official assignments are paid this allowance daily as subsistence. For you to benefit from this allowance, you must make an application 14 days before traveling.
In summary, the above allowances are all payable to teachers are always determined by the commission from time to time.
Is the transfer allowance paid when is transferred from a teacher is transferred from one school to another in the same region?
TSC gives that allowance if and only if it initiates the transfer itself but not you demanding. The allowance is paid together with your monthly salary at the rate the commission deems fit
Tsc should consider delocalized teachers in their first posting because we use alot of money for fare and catering expenses and if it is there how can one apply for it
You can write a letter to the TSC Office through the county offices. Make sure its signed by the school head
Hi, how is deployment to special school done?
I teach in a special school with no deployment no special allowance, was posted on 2019 September 5th till today.
Please I need a confirmation for my deployment it’s now olmost 4 years.508313
Are you SNE Trained?
Wonderful..but travelling allowance never yet.
What about enhancement
What about enhancement?
That one has not been approved among the allowances
Does un intern teacher paid allowances e.g commuter ,hardship, and house?
Nop, only those teachers on permanent and pensionable terms
How do I get the traveling allowance
You need to apply for it through the TSC County Offices
I think there should be an allowance for the delocalized teacher…. these teachers really suffer…. imagine house allowance for example 3500,yet the rent exceeds, traveling from Riftvalley to Eastern for example and it’s very expensive… surely he or she just works for such expenses and no savings at all…… and now the 3percent mandatory deduction ????????
The delocalization allowance ndo hiyo ya travel allowance. Its paid when the commission initiates the Transfer
Do Headteachers handling schools with high enrollment have any allowance if not I think it should be initiated because they are overworked.
Sure! Those teachers have a special allowance attached to their salary.
I have been serving in Kajiado County since 2012 and have been claiming the traveling allowance for me and my family since I hail from Bungoma County. Not only has the Commission not paid me this money, but I have never got a response to my letters, now written from three different work stations. TSC number 388494. Telephone: 0721235652.
I moved to Job Group M in 2008, and this was renamed C5 in 2017. I am still on C5. This means that I have stagnated for almost 15 years, which cannot be good for any employee. Just like there is a minimum period one can stay on a Job Group, there should also be a maximum. The minimum is 3 years; the maximum could be 6 years. I suggest that the Commission look into this and act on it, the cost implications notwithstanding.
I serve in Kajiado County where the policy of affirmative action is being implemented, albeit not officially. As they say, kwa ground things ni different. Many of my colleagues and I, not being locals are bypassed for promotions with the result that some colleagues are now subordinate to their former students, some if whom are in lower job groups. This is an anomaly that dies not make for staff morale. The Commission needs to look into this.
I was interdicted in July 2011, and was restored to the payroll in November of the same year. The letter of interdiction was dated July 19, 2011 and was for an offence which has been set right on July 11, eight days earlier. There should be a time frame, or any limitations with regard to the righting of a wrong. This interdiction, I hold, should be expunged altogether from my record, and the attendant consequences set right. One, of course, is the renumeration arising therefrom.
How can i get my responsibility allowance, I have been applying for it to no avail
Does tsc pay heads of department (job group C5) in schools with high enrollment.
Unless your position is known by TSC and your appointment was made through the commission

I have stayed in grade C5 for all this time.

Why is it that teachers in wasini Island are not getting risk and hardship allowance yet the area has challenges with transport, food, water and electricity. Crossing the 10km water channel across the Indian Ocean everyday under high tides put their life on the line. So many issues have been happening here yet we are not recognized.
Ask your area leaders to champion for the allowances. It will be easier that way
