TSC List of 11,000 Retired Teachers to Receive Pension
Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u has assured teachers and legislators that the government is making progress in repaying arrears owed to approximately 11,000 retired teachers who have not received their pensions for the past 27 years.
In May, the government allocated Ksh16 billion to settle these unpaid pensions dating back to 1997, but this amount was insufficient to cover all claims.
Since 1997, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has submitted 23,267 updated claims to the National Treasury, with 22,317 of them currently in the processing stage. The timeline for remitting the pending balances will depend on the availability of resources, according to the Treasury Cabinet Secretary.

The issue of pension payments is currently a contentious matter undergoing legal proceedings, and it is complicated by the fact that some retired teachers have already passed away. Some of these retirees are living in dire poverty due to the government’s delay in paying their pensions.
It’s worth noting that teachers who retired after July 2003 are not eligible for these pension benefits because they received compensation increases as part of the 1997 salary adjustment, which was supposed to be paid in five stages, concluding in 2001.
Akelo Misori, the Secretary-General of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education, has called on members of Parliament to exert pressure on the Treasury to ensure the timely payment of these outstanding pension claims.
