TSC Excluds 7,400 PTE Teachers From JSS Retooling
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that primary school teachers who were previously assigned to junior secondary school (JSS) will not be able to participate in the upcoming training scheduled for next week. In March, approximately 7,400 PTE teachers eligible for deployment were sent to teach 7th graders.
However, the TSC has specified that only newly hired JSS teachers will have the opportunity to attend the training from October 9th to October 13th.
In 2023, a total of 56,000 teachers responsible for 7th-grade students will commence training in the competency-based curriculum (CBC) and competency-based assessment (CBA) starting next week. Nancy Macharia, the CEO of the TSC, commended the teachers for their dedication to implementing the CBC guidelines while simultaneously fulfilling their regular teaching duties. She expressed her pride in pre-primary and primary schoolteachers who have embraced CBC to impart essential core competencies and values to Kenyan students.
During an event at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi, Kenya, marking World Teachers’ Day, Macharia made these remarks. The TSC had previously requested training for teachers in language, science, mathematics, humanities, and technical fields, as conveyed in a note sent to TSC Regional and County Directors on September 26.

Regarding the training venues, teachers in the 7th grade will receive their training at Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and various locations within the counties. Notably, master trainers and trainers of trainers (TOTs) received training earlier. Master trainers from various educational institutions, including TSC, KICD, KNEC, KEMI, CEMASTEA, MOE, KISE, and TTCs, began their training from October 2nd to 4th at the Kenya Institute of Special Education.
Following this, standard TOTs, including Curriculum Support Officers (CSOs), Teacher Educators (Tutors), TSC Sub County Directors, and Quality Assurance Officers for the Ministry of Education, will undergo training.
The training sessions for TOTs are scheduled for October 6th and 7th at Teacher Training Colleges and other locations nationwide. It’s important to note that all training will be conducted in-person.
This training initiative comes on the heels of TSC deploying 18,000 student teachers to junior high schools at the end of August and the beginning of September. Simultaneously, a national writing test for 7th graders is set to commence in October. The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has already made the test materials available for schools to download, print, and administer to students.
The subjects in 7th grade that require written tests are as follows, with the tests scheduled to run from October 2nd to October 26th, 2023:
