Schools to Start Closing Next week
Many preschools, elementary schools, and middle schools in Kenya have adjusted their vacation dates for November/December, moving them up to October 19 instead of the previously announced October 27, as per the Ministry of Education’s decision.
This change in vacation timing is significant because it is in preparation for the national exams, especially for students in class 8 and form four.
Learners who are not participating in the national exams will remain at home until January 8, 2024. The sixth and eighth-grade candidates will be taking the KPSEA and KCPE exams, respectively, over a four-day period from October 30 to November 2, 2023.
The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams for this year are scheduled to begin on November 3 and continue until November 24, 2023.
This year marks the final year of KCPE students under the 8-4-4 system, which has been replaced by a new 2-6-3-3-3 skills-based curriculum.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has reported that approximately 2.3 million candidates are expected to sit for the KCPE and KCSE exams this year. Of these, 1,415,315 candidates will be taking the KCPE exam, and 903,260 students will be sitting for the KCSE exam.
The KNEC Chief Executive Officer, David Njengere, has confirmed the completion of preparations for the candidates, including 1,282,574 Grade Six students participating in KPSEA.
There will be a total of 1,143 containers used for the KCSE, KCPE, and KPSEA 2023 exams, along with 576 distribution centers for KPSEA and KCPE exams, and 567 containers designated for distributing KCSE exam papers.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has identified 223,223 teachers to serve as invigilators and monitors for the 2023 national exams, with an additional 37,731 teachers selected as examiners for the national exams. Starting from November 27th, these teachers will initiate the grading process, which will continue through December 15, 2023.
