On the other hand, President William Ruto met with President Sergio Mattarella of Italy on March 14 in the Nairobi State House.
The Head of State said during a press conference with President Sergio Mattarella that the government would work with the Italian government to remove roadblocks impeding the construction of the Kimwarer, Arror, and Itare dams.
The President said, “We have decided to resume collaboration on the construction of the Arror, Kimwarer, and Itare dams as well as other water and sanitation projects, which are essential to our agenda on food security, water delivery, and climate action.
The Arror and Kimwarer projects, which Ruto described as “urgent and top priority” for the government’s intentions to ease the water shortage situation in some areas of the Rift Valley, were keen to resume in a “matter of months,” according to Ruto.
The Italian President also pledged to give over Ksh13 billion in loans and grants to help Kenya implement a number of projects in the fields of agriculture, health, the creative economy, and the digital superhighway.
The two dams’ (Arror and Kimwarer) construction came to a halt in 2019 when former President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered their cancellation due to egregious financial mismanagement.
