Publishers Announce Printing of 17 Million Grade 8 Textbooks
For the present class of Grade Seven students who will be moving on to Grade Eight in junior secondary in January, local publishers have declared intentions to print close to 17 million textbooks by September.
According to Kiarie Kamau, chair of the Kenya Publishers Association (KPA), 1.2 million textbooks are being processed for each learning area under grade eight. There are fourteen subject categories.
This comes after the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development’s endorsement. In order to encourage a reading culture among Kenyans, Eldoret town sponsored the first regional book fair, which brought together more than 30 publishers.
“The Grade Eight book titles will be displayed at the local book fair. The managing director of East African Educational Publishers, Mr. Kamau, stated, “We want our parents to become familiar with the new book titles.
Belio Kipsang, the principal secretary for basic education, reported two weeks ago that 18 million primary school textbooks had been issued by the ministry.

Publishers used the platform at the Eldoret Regional Book Fair, whose theme was “Nurturing Talent through Publishing,” to foster abilities like writing and drawing or creating artwork for children’s books.
We want to promote reading for pleasure as much as for academic success, he said.
To encourage a reading culture in the nation, he asked the government to hasten the approval of the national book policy.
At Nairobi’s Sarit Centre, the Kenya Publishers Association hosts the International Book Fair each September.
Book theft
Mr. Kamau remarked that the majority of publishers are battling both the high cost of raw materials and book piracy.
Publishers anticipated losses from set book piracy of up to Sh200 million yearly in January, following news that the offenders had switched to offshore printing.
“To hold offenders accountable, we are collaborating with the Kenya Copyright Board, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and anti-piracy agency. We know where these publications are printed, and we’ll be after them, said Mr. Kamau.
“We’ll take a stand in support of independently published writers and publishers. According to Mr. Odhiambo, some local publishers will use the platform to promote their most recent book releases and interact with readers.
Daily contacts with publishers and some authors, book releases, discussions and workshops, kid-friendly activities, giveaway prizes, and art and craft competitions are just a few of the events planned for the book fair.
Additionally, books will be sold for less.
