A plan by Mukumu Girls’ High School parents to storm the store and burn grains worthy Sh6.5 million was quashed by the police who lobbed teargas to disperse them.
While addressing the media, the parents said that they wanted the grains to be destroyed in their presence as directed by the County Governor and other Education Stakeholders even as the students resume for second term.
Kakamega Senator, Khalwale who was present with the parents said that the school was using excuses to save the grains worthy millions in the store.
“There are maize, Beans and rice in the store . I am properly informed, the stock in the store now is worthy Sh6.4 million.
” So everything they are saying about going to court and about getting a letter from the doctor is just a plan to save all that money,” Khalwale stated.

The officers who accompanied the western Regional Commissioner Macharia told the parents that the grains can not be destroyed in the absence of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
“We have to follow a certain procedure in order to do such a thing. NEMA and other authorities have to be present. It can not be done in lay manner like you want us to do it,” Irungu Stated.
The parents who had flocked in the school and who were charged with anger tried to force themselves to the store and at this point is when the police lobbed a teargas to disperse them.
“There was an order that all grain that all grain in the store destroyed and we are wondering why it has not been done.
“We demand that it be destroyed because something doesn’t add up and someone is not concerned about the health of our students even when they face death,” one of the parents stated.
Owing to the suspected cases of water and food poisoning that claimed lives of two students, the school was closed indefinitely on April 3.
Over 200 students showed signs of food poisoning with 25 of them being hospitalized.
After a teacher passed on in the school over the same complications, the Education CS Ezekiel Machogu visited the school and transfered the principal Fridah Ndolo.
