The Ministry of Education (MoE) has issued a directive this evening, instructing learners who have already reported to school to remain there for safety and security reasons. In a circular released on the evening of May 3, 2024, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu directed all regional, county, and sub-county Directors of Education to ensure that learners stay in school unless conditions allow for their safe return home.
CS Machogu emphasized the need for compliance with President William Ruto’s directive, issued during his state-of-the-nation address, indefinitely postponing school reopening. Additionally, Machogu reiterated his earlier directive for all Boards of Management (BoMs) to convene meetings and submit reports to the County Education Board (CEB) by May 8, 2024, detailing the status of their respective schools.
Following the submission of school reports, CEBs are required to hold urgent meetings to assess the situation and submit comprehensive reports to the CS by May 10, 2024. Regional Directors of Education (RDEs) have been tasked with providing regular updates on the status of learning institutions within their jurisdictions, particularly regarding safe school opening and data on learners not in school.
Furthermore, for schools accommodating Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) displaced by floods, Machogu directed education field officers to collaborate with local National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) to identify alternative accommodation for the affected individuals.
This measure aims to ensure that school facilities remain available for normal learning activities amidst the challenging circumstances.
