List of Irrelevant Degree Courses Offered in Kenyan Universities
The Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) recently found that many university degree courses are irrelevant.
Cofek and the Elimika Mashinani Trust interviewed 250 graduate respondents from 25 counties by phone between June 2 and June 15.
The report emphasises that public institutions offer many of these courses.
Despite having professors who are rarely or never used, more than 300 Commission on University Education (CUE)-approved courses have few or no students.
According to the report, these courses affect 40% of university students, or 4 out of 10.

These programmes are old or oversaturated in the job market.
According to the report, 8 out of 10 students in such courses received no career assistance from their schools or parents. These students want any accessible degree certification.
Despite low market demand, these courses cost the government and parents a lot. They also fail to teach graduates self-employment skills.” The report concludes
60% of respondents blame KUCCPS for giving “stale” admission courses. 30 percent blame the CUE, while 10 percent blame students failing any degree course.
The study lists courses in Japanese, History, Kiswahili, Cultural Studies, Earth Science, and Zoology.
Other courses include Bachelor of Arts in Church Music and Theology, Bachelor of Music Theory and Composition, Bachelor of Science in Forestry, Sugar Technology, Events and Convention Management, and Range Management.
According to the poll, private colleges base at least 70% of their programmes on employability, whereas state institutions connect only 20% of their courses with market demands.

We study sometimes not because of jobs, but to get education. Your capitalistic view of education is decieving and thus the parameters for evaluating courses. Eg, Church music and theology is for worship and human endeavour.
A very poorly written and researched article.
