KUPPET Weighs in on TSC Transfer of Responsibilities to Other Agencies
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has taken a stand against several recommendations put forth by the Presidential Task Force on education reforms. They argue that these proposals could potentially reduce the responsibilities of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and infringe upon the rights of educators.
This position was voiced during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Nandi South, where KUPPET’s national chairman, Omboko Milemba, and Secretary General, Akelo Misori, emphasized the importance of revisiting certain suggestions.
Milemba stressed the vital role that TSC has played in employment and supervision within the education sector. He warned against any attempts to curtail its authority, as it would be detrimental to teachers’ rights.
Milemba advocated for a thorough examination of recommendations, especially those that interfere with the TSC, suggesting that education reforms should aim to strengthen existing institutions rather than undermine their functions.

In terms of teacher management and supervision, Milemba pointed out that some proposals had been implemented without consulting education stakeholders. He firmly stated KUPPET’s opposition to transferring TSC roles to other government agencies, including county commissioners and provincial administrators.
Recently, the National Assembly also expressed concerns about implementing education reforms without Parliament’s consent. Omboko underscored the need to reconsider the laws governing institutional structures and indicated that KUPPET would push for a parliamentary review to ensure that the new education policies benefit all stakeholders.
Finally, he emphasized the importance of considering teacher welfare to create an efficient and conducive working environment within the education sector.
