KUCCPS to open portal for varsity placement next week
After the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) opens the site, students looking to enroll in universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions (TVETs) can begin to submit their applications the next week.
In a meeting with the registrars of all institutions on Monday, KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Agnes Mercy Wahome made this announcement.
The institutions are currently pressed for time to comply with the new funding model established by President William Ruto last week by submitting data in accordance with it.
Universities have until tomorrow (Tuesday) to furnish KUCCPS with information about the costs of their programs, following which the agency will publish the data to aid students in making decisions.
Dr. Wahome gave the registrars instructions to give the cost of all their programs on the Monday meeting, regardless of whether the students are self- or government-sponsored.
“How much does your program cost? There are issues since there are so various definitions of students as self- or government-sponsored. How much does it cost to provide the service?” asked Dr. Wahome.
The vice chancellors had previously held a discussion on the subject on Sunday.
Dr. Wahome instructed the registrars to merely provide the fees of the various programs, leaving out the expenditures of lodging and food.
Dr. Ruto’s new proposal does away with block funding for university students in favor of funding each student according to the cost of the course they are enrolled in at a percentage that will be decided by the government.
Dr. Wahome asked the institutions to only disclose the true cost of the first year of each program for the sake of admitting the 2022 applicants during the meeting with registrars.
Prior to 2015, universities were paid under the Universities Funding program utilizing the differentiated unit cost (DUC).
Given that universities have different costs, it gives the average course cost across all universities, but this is certain to alter under the new system.
According to Dr. Wahome, the price of engineering and clinical medicine programs will probably change over time as a result of the associated internships.
Dr. Wahome had written to institutions on Saturday, requesting that they send information by Tuesday showing the cost each year.
Please take note that the government will only offer scholarships to students who choose degree programs at public universities, even though Kuccps will publish all programs. Students who choose to enroll in private university and Tvets programs will not be eligible for government subsidies and will only be able to apply for Helb loans.
