KUCCPS Director Reveals Petty Error Costing University Applicants
On Wednesday, June 7, a director from Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) said that some applicants were likely to lose out on university spots because they neglected to submit their applications.
John Olouch, head of Placement Coordination and Career Development at KUCCPS, revealed to Kenyans.co.ke that a number of applicants were skipping the last essential stage in the application process by leaving courses in the basket inside the portal.
The impacted people, according to the director, did not carefully read the instructions.

The system will show that the crop of applicants with options left in the basket did not submit any applications when the application window expires.
What a Basket Does
The director claims that when candidates choose different courses from a bigger pool of courses published on the KUCCPS web site, a basket acts similarly to a grocery cart in a store.
They are expected to choose at random whatever many courses they wish from that basket. The candidates might later restrict their options before submitting the application.
However, Olouch, a former lecturer at Rongo University, saw that several candidates left their coursework in the basket without submitting it.
“When people use the portal, they can choose from more than 100 courses offered by all universities. They take them up and place them in the basket for the time being. They can put more in the basket than they are obligated to choose, he said.
“When they come back, they have narrowed down the list and are working with the courses. Some of the students could not have read and comprehended it or they might believe that by placing the courses in the basket, they have submitted their applications.
“That is comparable to choosing products at the store, loading them into a cart, and leaving. That does not imply that one must purchase every item in the shopping cart. Others can be chosen and brought back, he insisted.
The deadline to submit college or university placement decisions was set on Wednesday, June 7.
On May 17, the Education Cabinet Secretary opened the portal and announced that courses chosen at public institutions would only be eligible for government loans and scholarships, while courses chosen at private colleges would be eligible for government loans.
