KUCCPS Advise To 2022 KCSE Candidates As Portal Close
Tomorrow is the deadline for the first round of college and university applications, and calls are being made for Kenyan youngsters who did not meet the requirements for degree programmes to enrol in technical and vocational training programmes.
The minimum entry grade for degree programmes is C+, and 19.9% (173,127) of the 869,782 candidates who took the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination achieved that mark or above.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) is advising the remaining 696,655 (80.1%) students who received grades between C and E to take advantage of the options for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) that are available.
According to Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome, the chief executive officer of KUCCPS, this would not only give thousands of young people a road to higher education, but it will also lessen waste.
For instance, just 13% of the 7,889 applicants who took the 2022 KCSE exam in Turkana County received a C+ or higher. According to the CEO of KUCCPS, the remainder (87%) received grades in the range of C to E.
The students who received a D- or an E can join in certificate and artisan programmes at TVET institutions in Lodwar. During an open day at Turkana University College on May 29, she added, “They can later take diploma studies there.
She expressed worry that some Form Four graduates who had received the required C+ grade for admission to a university had chosen to go fishing in Lake Turkana as opposed to continuing their studies.
She asked teachers to get in touch with their former students and encourage them to apply for courses through the KUCCPS site, noting that every student had the chance to advance their studies regardless of their grade.
Kindly inform them that they are welcome to start over, no matter what they have. She encouraged the teachers in attendance, “Let them come and apply for the certificate, diploma, and even degree courses of their choice.
The CEO urged the youth to take advantage of the opportunities provided by public technical and vocational schools, including as National Polytechnics, which have advertised their diploma and artisan programmes on the KUCCPS website.
They include recent arrivals like the Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas, which has listed TVET courses in engineering, environmental science, laboratory science, and telecommunication, among others, and the Kengen Geothermal Training Centre, whose courses provide skills for the energy sector.
Additionally, the government has promised to invest in five priority industries—agriculture, micro, small, and medium-sized businesses, housing, healthcare, the digital superhighway, and the creative economy—in order to provide employment prospects for TVET graduates.
Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, stressed the importance of TVET in his remarks as he announced the opening of the KUCCPS application portal on May 17.
“I want to urge all of our young people, including those who received the C+ required for admittance into a university, to think about enrolling in courses at one of our TVET colleges. The more than 200 public TVET institutes offer a course for every KCSE grade, according to the CS, who also noted that under the new funding model, students will have access to government loans and scholarships.
He continued, “We must give our kids essential skills if we are to realise our agenda for Agriculture, MSME Economy, Housing, Healthcare, the Digital Superhighway, and Creative Economy.
The purpose of KUCCPS is to coordinate the admission of students to universities and colleges, to disseminate information about the courses that are offered, their costs, and the government-prioritized fields of study, to gather and store information about student placement, and to create career guidance programmes for the benefit of students.
Students are placed by KUCCPS at all levels, including artisan, craft, diploma, and degree. A secondary school graduate with any KCSE mean grade can log onto the site and pick a course that fits their grade level. The KUCCPS website or the KUCCPS Students App, both of which are available on the Google Playstore, both provide access to the portal.
The placement of students in universities and TVET institutions will be separated from funding beginning with this year’s intake, which means that students will apply for funding once the placement procedure is over.
Visit the KUCCPS offices in Nairobi or the Huduma Centres, where KUCCPS has stationed officers and trained people to provide guidance, if you need assistance filling out your application.
