KNUT Says No To Ruto’s Plan To Pinch 3% From Teachers For Housing
The Kenya National Union of Teachers is currently posing a big threat to the government’s move to subject teacher’s salaries to 3% tax for building them houses. This is something that the teachers union has strongly disagreed with in a rush to save their cash and escape unnecessary taxes. Speaking through their Secretary George Wanjala, the teachers fraternity is among the few groups which are working on bringing down this particular proposal.
Wanjala said that these teachers have already been making some payments in corporates and this is enough. They treated any government’s plan to subject their peanuts to another set of salary as harassment.
Speaking to the press during his public address, Mr. George Wanjala said this;
“We don’t need the government to save money for us. We are saving our money from corporative societies,” Wanjala said.
Within the past week, the teachers union body called a press on Thursday with many Kenya National Union of Teachers officials from Trans-Nzoia where they addressed the government asking for an increase in the size of salaries they have been receiving from the government. This is specifically the cumulative earnings they used to make before the housing levy because the new debate in town.
A bunch of the officials claimed that many people are already in tears and disbelief on hearing the tax man is still after them to pay the 3% house levy besides the more than 30% subjected on their taxes
The National General secretary asked for clarity on this topic saying this;
“In summary, I want to say it was all about public participation. Let us get to know what is in this levy, how we can confront it and how we can now deliver the information to our members. We must sit and listen. We must be indicted properly on what will come from this levy,” said Mr. Collins Oyuu.
