KNEC Gives Update on Administration Of Grade 3 Assignment
The directions on how Grade 3 teachers would perform and grade various tasks under the Integrated Learning Assessment (ILA) for their Kenya Early Years Assessment (KEYA) have been made available by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).
Developing and fostering moral values in students for an ethical society is this year’s subject, and the tasks that revolve around it mostly focus on general learning objectives for early years’ education.
According to the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), learners should be able to demonstrate fundamental literacy and numeracy skills for learning by the end of early years’ education (ranging from Pre-Primary 1 to Grade 3); communicate appropriately using verbal and/or non-verbal modes in a variety of contexts; and demonstrate appropriate etiquette in social relationships.
In order to enhance health and wellness, they should also be able to use creativity and critical thinking to solve problems, explore their immediate surroundings for fun and learning, and develop good hygiene, nutrition, sanitation, and safety habits.

They should also exhibit the development of their emotional, physical, spiritual, aesthetic, and moral faculties for balanced living, as well as a respect for the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the nation for peaceful coexistence and a continued application of digital literacy skills for learning and fun.
The assignment will be completed within a two-month period, per KNEC’s guidelines, and will conclude in an exhibition day where Grade 3 students will present initiatives that further moral principles.
On the other hand, the teachers have been given explicit instructions to direct the students through each phase of the assignment as needed, with key skills and core values incorporated into the sub-tasks being assessed.

Each student will also be required to create and maintain an assessment portfolio, which may be physical, electronic (e-portfolio), or both, as proof of their learning. Entries in the portfolio must include examples of the student’s work on each of the subtasks, the teacher’s evaluations of that work, the student’s reflections on that work, and the date on which each subtask was completed and graded.

A facility or resource in the school will be assigned to each group of learners as explained in the subtask, and teachers will use the assessment tools and scoring guides provided for each task to evaluate their students’ work. KNEC has instructed schools to make sure that students are guided to observe safety while completing the tasks, with Assessment of Students being done prior to the Exhibition Day.
Task in Performance
In this year’s theme, Grade 3 learners are expected to demonstrate responsible ways of taking care of facilities and resources in school, understanding the story they read or was read to them in order to get its teachings (Kufahamu hadithi aliyoisoma au aliyosomewa ili kupata mafunzo ya hadithi) for Kiswahili task, use new words in a familiar tune for effective communication and observe rules when pushing and pulling for own and others safety.
them in Grade 3 will be expected to see images and utilise digital devices to watch particular video clips with messages that can help them develop and foster moral principles, under the supervision of teachers, parents, or guardians.
In this assignment, teachers are requested to submit images or videos of lessons that foster moral principles in their students.
In groups of 10 to 15 students, they will also need to name different facilities or resources (such as classrooms, furniture, restrooms, school buses, playgrounds, gardens, animals, laboratories, staff rooms, libraries, stores, kitchens, dining halls, and dormitories, among others) that can be found in a school setting.
The KNEC has warned schools not to charge students, parents, or guardians for the completion of the ILA duty. In addition, they will be required to locate locally accessible tools or materials for use in maintaining the school buildings or resources.
They will also need to demonstrate how to take care of one of the identified facilities or resources, and in groups of 10 to 15 students, they will be guided by the teacher in coming up with words and phrases that represent moral values, choosing an existing tune and setting the text for the chosen words and phrases, learning and practising the song for presentation, and performing the song to convey their moral message.
Day of the School Practical
Additionally, they will be required to participate in a tug of war while adhering to the rules of pulling and pushing. Teachers will be required to decide how many students will be on each side, and each student will be expected to keep a weekly log of the actions they took to complete the subtasks.
After that, schools must plan an exhibition day where Grade 3 students will perform the East African and Kenyan national anthems at the start of the event, display posters, charts, and other materials with messages promoting moral values in society, perform a tug-of-war for entertainment, and display their assessment portfolios.
The key skills being worked on here are teamwork and communication as students work in groups and play pull-and-push games, as well as creativity and imagination as students create posters, charts, and patterns with messages promoting ethical principles in society.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are developed as students identify school facilities and come up with practical tools and methods to help maintain them. Digital literacy is also developed as students look for video clips that can help to spread moral values, and self-efficacy is developed as students give different presentations.
The values that are linked are responsibility, which students demonstrate by following safety precautions while engaging in various activities, love and unity, which students demonstrate by helping one another while working in groups, patriotism, which students demonstrate by taking care of school resources and facilities, integrity, which students demonstrate by faithfully fulfilling their roles, and respect, which students demonstrate by listening to teachers’ instructions and taking into account one another’s opinions while engaged in activities.
