JSS Teachers Threaten Down Their Tools Over Delayed Pay
As schools reopen next week, the Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers have threatened to down their tools due to delayed pay of about 50% of the teachers.
These teachers are decrying delayed payment three months since they were deployed in their respective institutions.
The commission has indicated that at least 17,800 JSS teachers have not received their salary due to delay in reporting and submission of requisite documents.
As it stands now, only 50 percent of the teachers have been paid. The commission last week indicated that teachers are given a period of 30 days to report to their stations. Late reporting will deter them from receiving their salary in time.
These teachers are among the 35,500 teachers that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) hired early this year to take charge of Junior Secondary Schools in the country.
The commission took to its Facebook page to clarify why these teachers did not receive their salaries despite claiming to have worked for over three months now.
The commission stated that these teachers submitted their documents late and even they reported to their stations late than required for salary processing.
The commission has promised to resolve this the issues and has mentioned that all those who have missed their salaries will receive this month.
Today, Wednesday 3, May Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers from Nandi County demonstrated citing the delayed payment by the commission.
Several JSS teachers are battling depression as they can not be able to afford the basic commodities and even fend for their families that are relying heavily on them.
Cases have been reported of these teachers being evacuated from their rented house due to failure to pay the rent in the last three months.
The property of these teachers are also facing auction by the landlords to pay part of the rent.
A teacher was reported this week in western to have list his life while in the house on what is believed to be starvation. This teacher had earlier mentioned that he has never been paid since his deployment.
Another teacher was also clobbered by the bodaboda rider whom he had contracted to avail him in school daily with hopes he will be paid his salary so that he can sort this rider.
After the commission failed to pay him last month, the bodaboda rider never wanted to give him a listening ear but went ahead to clobber him leading to the teacher being hospitalized.
