High School Teachers to be Deployed As JSS Principals
In addition to other staff members, the Junior Secondary School (JSS), which houses the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades, will have its own principal and governing council by 2024.
Parents of secondary school-aged children will also be obliged to buy new uniform sets in compliance with the new draught regulations announced by the government.
Each secondary school will have its own board of administration, which will be in charge of managing the facilities’ day-to-day operations and finances.
However, during the transitional year, primary school principals will also oversee junior secondary schools.
Specific rules have been created for the move to lower secondary education. Although lower secondary schools are placed in elementary schools, the government wants to make sure that the two levels of education remain separate.

For junior high school pupils, access to laboratories was a major problem.
However, more information on the draughts guidelines was revealed at a meeting of stakeholders at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), presided over by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
According to Machogu, the team’s duties included supporting consistency in the application of the junior high school curriculum, including teaching, learning, and evaluation, and facilitating a smooth transition from the sixth-form primary school to the junior high school.
The team’s planned outcomes, said Machogu, would make sure that all children, including those with special needs and disabilities, have access to a secure, appropriate, and sufficient physical infrastructure and a welcoming atmosphere.
Various stakeholders’ roles in the JSS
The group was also tasked with outlining the roles and responsibilities of important participants in the implementation of the various Junior High School components and making suggestions on how to guarantee the availability of sufficient and qualified human resources to facilitate the Junior High School curriculum delivery.
The assistant principals are currently in charge of managing how the curriculum is implemented in the classrooms.
This position will be filled at junior high schools by these senior teachers. Additionally, it was announced that those secondary school teachers who have completed CBC-compliant training will be invited to teach specific topics at the lower secondary level.
