HELB Issues New Directive To All University Students
New loan application criteria for continuing students at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) were released by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) on August 1. Select students should apply through the HELB app or USSD Code *642#, according to HELB.
Ezekiel Machogu, the Education Cabinet Secretary, introduced a new financial model, and as a result, the app was upgraded. HELB advised the students to make sure the software was updated. Students also need to register with a current phone number and SIM cards that are registered in their names.
“To finish registration, provide your initial name exactly as it appears on your national ID card, the ID number, and a working email address. Select a degree by clicking the loans tab.
“Then click apply on the Undergraduate/Certificate/Diploma second and subsequent loan,” the notice said in part.
Students were therefore urged to examine the loan details before answering the financial literacy questions.
“To view and check the status of your credit application, choose your preferred loan payment option and click Request Loan. To finish the loan application, click submit. You will be notified that your application was successful with a pop-up notification. Additionally, the loan serial number will be shown, according to HELB.

The HELB has promised to inform the students about the distribution of maintenance, tuition loans, and other services. Additionally, they stated that students who were having trouble with their applications were recommended to contact the loans board at contactcentre@helh.co.ke. The application deadline for loans is September 30.
Ezekiel Machogu, the Education Cabinet Secretary, carried out the government’s request by launching a new HELB on July 31. Machogu introduced the Higher Education Financing Portal, which would make government financing available to university and TVET students.
“Since the presidential directive on May 3, 2023, on the roll-out of the new funding model, the government has developed and completed the Higher Education Financing Portal to receive applications for scholarships, bursaries, and loans for university and TVET students,” the CS said.
