Govt Announces Recruitment of 24,000 Teachers Beginning July
On June 28, the Ministry of Education, part of the government, presented plans to hire nearly 24,000 teachers to close the teacher shortage that exists in schools all around the nation.
Ezekiel Machogu, the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education, stated that the hiring process will begin at the beginning of the fiscal year 2023–2024.
Machogu was addressing at the Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa during the 46th Annual Conference of the Kenya Secondary Heads Association (KESSHA).
The CS gave assurances to school administrators that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will promote parity in teacher deployment.
According to Machogu’s direction, qualified teachers will be able to begin applying for the posts the week commencing July 3rd, according to Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chairperson Jamleck Muturi.
Muturi additionally said that the Kenya Kwanza government has put aside Ksh4.6 billion to hire interns in an effort to address the nation’s teacher shortage.
TSC also disclosed that it has obtained a Ksh1 billion capitation for promotions, particularly for principals, in addition to hiring instructors and interns.

Furthermore, beginning on July 1, the government would no longer pay schools’ capitation through a quarterly method; rather, school heads will now receive capitation in the proportions of 50:30:20 for the first, second, and third terms, respectively.
President William Ruto’s first year in power will see the government hire 60,000 teachers in all, Machogu said during the conference.
After taking office in September 2022, Ruto’s administration has already hired 36,000 new teachers as part of the biggest hiring drive in TSC history.
While most of the 36,000 people employed for the fiscal year 2022–2023 were interns, TSC hired 9,000 teachers on permanent, pensionable terms.
However, the government did not specify how many teachers would be hired on a permanent basis with pension benefits in the fiscal year 2023–2024.
The country’s education crisis will be helped by the 24,000 additional instructors, but Muturi claims that Ruto’s pledge to hire 35,000 teachers was not met.
The President stated that the government would match teachers hired in the 2022/2023 fiscal year in the next fiscal year on May 20, 2023, during a speech at Limuru Girls Secondary School.
