Education CS Gives Update On Payment of KNEC Examiners
On June 7, 2023, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu made an appearance in parliament to address to questions from members of parliament on a variety of issues pertaining to the education sector.
The questions covered a wide spectrum of topics. Kipkoros Joseph, the Member of Parliament for the Baringo North Constituency, was one of the people who posed questions, and one of the things he questioned was when the instructors who marked the KCSE 2022 examinations will be paid. From supervisors to markers, exam invigilators, and everything in between.
In response, Cabinet Secretary Machogu mentioned that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is currently behind on invoices totaling 2 billion Kenyan Shillings. Because of this, it has been unable to meet its financial responsibilities, such as paying its examiners, contracted officials, and suppliers. Machogu emphasised that greater cash is required for KNEC in order for them to pay the debts that are still outstanding.
The Secretary of State for Education pleaded with the members of parliament to provide financial support to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) so that it can pay the contractual experts. However, CS Machogu did not provide any concrete timeframes or dates indicating when the examiners would be paid for their work.
The vast majority of teachers who participated in the exam marking scramble have indicated on social media and in the press that they may not be available to volunteer their services in future marking exercises if the Ministry of Education does not take immediate action to rectify the situation.
