Blow to P1 Teachers As TSC Makes This Statement on Employment
Starting in 2024, a primary school teaching certificate will no longer be granted solely based on a PTE (Primary Teacher Education) certificate, according to a report from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the employer of teachers.
The TSC plans to fully implement the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in all primary schools from Grades 1 through 6. This shift renders primary school instructors with only PTE qualifications inadequate for the new curriculum.
To adapt to the changes, PTE instructors are encouraged to upgrade to the latest DPTE (Diploma in Primary Teacher Education) certifications. Furthermore, all diploma teachers will be considered the lowest entry level for the teaching profession, categorized under job group C1, rather than B5.
Many primary and early childhood educators have already enrolled in programs to upgrade their qualifications to the CBC Diploma. The taskforce’s recommendation states that both P1 and ECDE instructors should undergo the necessary training to meet the requirements of the new curriculum.
Upon completing their studies, the initial groups of trainee instructors received a diploma certificate from the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec).

To advance to the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE), P1 instructors must meet specific prerequisites, including holding a current PTE Certificate, TSC registration, completion of a 1500-hour residential program, successful completion of all upgrading program courses, a 300-hour teaching practicum, and fulfilling Knec’s evaluation and course work hour requirements.
This means that all P1 teachers who wish to obtain permanent employment with TSC must undergo the diploma upgrade. Both P1 and ECDE teachers are advised to pursue upgrading to enhance their competitiveness in the job market.

Why did the government not offer Diplomas to TTC students from inception. They had set minimum entry grade to TTC to be C plain all along. I think that qualified the students to pursue a Diploma.
