Blow to KNUT, KUPPET As They Miss out on July Salary Increment For Teachers
In the most recent iteration of the plan to increase teachers’ salaries, the teachers’ unions Knut, Kuppet, and Kusnet were not included.
In their pay for the month of July, TSC teachers, along with other civil officials, will receive an increase in compensation. They will receive a pay rise of between seven and ten percent, depending on the range.
On Friday, President William Ruto made the announcement, stating that this is being done to protect public servants from the current severe economic conditions.
“I am aware that there is a proposal before the SRC to raise the pay of several cadres of public servants, including civil officials and other types of public servants. “We have agreed that beginning tomorrow, your salaries will be adjusted between 7 and 10 percent,” Deputy President William Ruto stated during the introduction of the new e-citizen platform at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC).
On the other hand, the three teachers unions, which have been at the forefront when it comes to striking compensation deal for teachers, will not be at the table when decisions are made over changes in wage.

In point of fact, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) will be the sole entity responsible for making the necessary compensation adjustments.
When teacher unions negotiate salary increases, it is to their tremendous advantage. Knut and Kuppet had begun discussions with TSC about modifying the CBA for the years 2021-2025, but the discussions ran into a roadblock.
When TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia testified in front of Parliament in May, she stated that the Commission need Sh56 billion over the course of the following four years beginning in July 2023 in order to elevate teacher pay from job category B5 to job group D5.
“In accordance with the advisory provided by the Salaries Review Commission, the commission negotiated a non-monetary CBA with the teacher unions for the 2021-2025 school year.” Dr. Macharia shared this information with members of the National Assembly Education and Research Committee, which is chaired by Julius Melly. “It was agreed that the CBA be reviewed mid-term if the economic situation would improve in the country,” Dr. Macharia said.
Macharia stated that in order for teachers to be motivated in their profession, they want an annual wage increase of fourteen billion shekels (Sh14 billion).
“The Commission would like to review the CBA for the years 2021-2025, particularly the salary component, with the goal of motivating teachers who are employed by the Commission,” She continued.
As a result, we would like to ask this Committee to support the Commission in obtaining 14 billion Kenyan shillings per year for a period of four years to pay for the same.
Knut had suggested a 60% wage rise for teachers to be paid in July, while Kuppet desired a 42% salary increment for teachers to be paid in July during the negotiations that TSC had begun with teachers unions.
