Blow to KNUT & KUPPET As Principals Deny Then Audience
Secondary school principals are gathering at Mombasa’s Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Hall for the 46th Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA).
The secondary school principals are convening for four days under the leadership of their chairman, Kahi Indimuli.
Collins Oyuu, secretary general of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), and Akello Misori, secretary of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), were among those set to address the school heads.
However, the two have been pulled from the KESSHA event schedule and will not address the Principals.
Principals and teachers protested that union representatives are traitors and should not be allowed near teacher activities.
This latest incident occurs only one day after Kuppet national chairman Omboko Milemba was rescued from furious secondary school teachers in Homa Bay County who confronted him for supporting the Finance Bill 2023 in the National Assembly.
Milemba, who is also the Member of Parliament for Emuhaya Constituency, was escorted by the union’s Secretary General Akelo Misori and other Kuppet officials to a secondary school teachers’ sports tournament at Tom Mboya University in Homa Bay town on Sunday evening.
The professors greeted them warmly and seemed excited about the event, but approximately four minutes later, the master of ceremonies welcomed Milemba to give his introductory words, which would prepare the way for the final football match.
The KUPPET chief began addressing instructors, but controversy arose when he introduced himself and stated that he voted ‘yes’ on the Finance Bill.
When they heard the announcement, a number of instructors began booing. Milemba ignored the din and continued to discuss the importance of the Finance Bill 2023 to the country’s prosperity.
His apologies fell on deaf ears as teachers accused him of betraying them by voting for the contentious bill.
Misori ascended the stage after more than 15 minutes of uproar to chastise the professors for their impolite actions.
Some teachers tossed various objects at him as he exited the podium, including stones.
To protect his boss, one of Milemba’s bodyguards removed two pistols and pointed them at the teachers to keep them from throwing stones.
Misori and Yogo denounced the incident and stated that the teachers were wrong to be intolerant of Milemba.
This comes as President William Ruto signs the contentious Finance Bill 2023, which was passed by the National Assembly last week.
The president signed the Bill on Monday morning at State House in Nairobi.
After a third reading by Kuria Kimani, chairman of the National Assembly Finance and National Planning Committee, the Bill cruised past Parliament, and Kenyans will now have to dig deeper into their pockets to support the government’s first budget.
